New research reveals that people who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
