EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
